Sunrays On Jewel

Sunrays On Jewel

Recently I had the opportunity to photograph the artist, Jewel. But before I go any further about this image, let me clear something up right away. No, I don’t get to meet the artists I photograph and hang out with them and all that. I rarely get to meet any of them face to face. Typically if I meet someone and actually get a second with them it’s a member of their band. So no, I haven’t met Jewel or Chis Isaak or Chris Daughtry etc etc. Sometimes I think that would be fun but they’re at the venue to do their job and so am I. And besides, what if you met someone and then you didn’t like them? It could happen, and then that would taint how you photograph that person or that band. Now your job is much more difficult. So if I really think about it, I’m fine with not meeting the artists I photograph.

So a lot of the credit for this image goes to the Ted and his crew at DJE Sound and Lighting. They’ve made some great light setups and as a photographer it really benefits me and my job. At this particular show of Jewels in Temecula, CA, as I was photographing her I watched one of the lights keep panning down her body as she stood and sang in front of her mic. I watched the light and angled myself so that the light rays would almost make a halo or like streams of light around her hat. Well the magic all came together for the image above. So very fortunate to have made this image.

In conclusion, photography is about light and seeing. Light that illuminates in flattering and creative ways so that your photograph tells the story that you want told. Seeing what is happening in the frame and anticipating would could be in the frame in order to capture the light and subject at “the decisive moment”.
